We have raised over £10,000 to build a bronze statue in Tamworth of C/Sgt Watchman V, mascot of the Staffordshire Regiment. This will serve as a new public memorial to the regimental family. C/Sgt Watchman V is the mascot of the Staffordshire Regiment and holds the Freedom of Tamworth, so he was the obvious choice to honour our brave servicemen.
We launched the community project 18 months ago to build a life size bronze statue of Sgt Watchman V to honour all the mascots and handlers that have served the regiment, as well as all the servicemen of the Regiment itself.
Watchman and their handlers carry out their duties on a voluntary basis and give up much of their time to carry out this important duty. We believe they deserve a statue to Watchman and his predecessors in a public place, to thank them for their selfless service to the Regiment and County.
Watchman is a familiar face to many people in Staffordshire and a much loved mascot. Recently crowned the "Westminster Dog of the Year", all Watchman have attracted much public attention and love over the many years of service to the Regiment.
A life size bronze statue was commissioned and is in production. We are very lucky to have artist Johanna Domke-Guyot making the sculpture. Much or her other works can been see at www.facebook.com/Johanna-Domke-Guyot-MA-sculptures-1126553240745160/
The total cost of the project is around £15k, so while we have raised the bulk of the costs for the statue, fundraising is ongoing for other costs such as the base, engraved memorial bricks, installation, etc...
Please support the project and help us build a lasting tribute to the Staffordshire Regiment and its many hardworking mascots and handlers.
The project is supported by Tamworth Borough Council and Community Together CIC. All funds raised will held by Community Together CIC (a not for profit community interest company) until the project is completed.
